Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. As a child Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford began performing in her teens, and was part of the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time however, Ford realised that this was not the best place for her. Ford later applied for a spot at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. She already had her TV debut in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in programs on television including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Apart from her regular stage work, Tate was a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. However, Tate quickly began gaining recognition for her stand-up comedic performances that she incorporated into her show in 1996.
